“I think the players are delighted that it’s on the grass rather than out on the water,” he laughed. “I don’t think they’d fancy it so much if it was a boat race, maybe we can have a rematch at sea the next time. We were delighted to accept the invitation of the game from Clipper, it’s a nice way to celebrate the fact that two major events are being held in the city in the same week. It’s seems to be generating some interest from the public which is great and we’ll be playing it in the right spirit – that we must win!”
With Foyle Cup games not scheduled to begin until 1pm on Wednesday, the organisers are hopeful that some of the teams will take advantage of the free morning to support their coaches in action.
Well known local coaches Paul McLaughlin from Trojans FC and Oxford’s Kevin Doherty will jointly manage the Foyle Cup side which will contain a number of visiting international coaches.
“The biggest problem I had with a team of coaches was that every one of them wanted to be the manager,” Michael revealed. “It’ll be interesting to see how they take to being instructed instead of giving the orders.
“We have 16 teams travelling to the tournament from America, three from Africa and teams from France, Sweden, Finland, England and Scotland so I’m hoping to make the team as international as possible.
“We would love to see sailing enthusiasts at our games next week and I’m sure there our teams and supporters will be down at the Quay enjoying the Foyle Maritime Festival.”
This year’s Foyle Cup from July 16th – 21st is set to be the biggest yet with over 400 teams and 6,500 participants taking part and over 90,000 spectators expected to attend the games.
