Mid and East Antrim Mayor, Councillor Paul Reid, has hailed Broughshane’s Village of the Year triumph and congratulated the community for its incredible efforts.
The ‘Garden Village of Ulster’ saw off hundreds of rivals from across the UK to seal victory in the Channel 4 series finale earlier this year.
Broughshane was crowned the UK’s best village, as well as receiving a cash prize of £10,000 to fund community work.
Hosting a reception, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Paul Reid, said Broughshane’s achievement was deserved recognition of the efforts of the village’s volunteers and community representatives.
Inspirational Community Spirit
He said: “This is an incredible achievement by all those in Broughshane. This success is the culmination of years of hard work, commitment and inspirational community spirit. Council has a superb relationship with the community in Broughshane.
“The showcasing of Broughshane to a national audience, its brilliant residents and volunteers, and its excellent economic and tourism potential is superb news for our Borough. Our operations team must also be commended for our staff’s sterling efforts in maintaining and enhancing Broughshane. I have no doubt the Village of the Year success will lead to even greater interest in the area from across the UK and further afield.”
Real Buzz of Excitement
Lexie Scott, chairman of Broughshane Community Association said: “It’s been absolutely tremendous winning the title and we haven’t stopped since! We’ve had an increase in visitors to the village, and not just from Northern Ireland, but from across Ireland and the UK. There’s a real buzz of excitement around the village now.
“The great thing about winning the show is that it has helped showcase the fantastic scenery, shops and most importantly people, we have here in Broughshane to a wider audience. This increased footfall has helpoed our local shops and businesses as well by boosting local trade.
“We’re delighted to see an increased interest in our village and we have a number of events planned throughout the summer including Supercup matches, 5 and 10k races which are gaining numbers every year and we are also hosting a family fun day in conjunction with Council as we launch new cycle events with local clubs.”
